Heartburn Symptoms

Does This Sound Familiar?

Many people have different acid-reflux-related heartburn triggers, but most people have similar heartburn symptoms. The most common symptoms of heartburn are:

  • A burning feeling in the chest just behind the breastbone that occurs after eating and lasts anywhere from a few minutes to several hours
  • Chest discomfort, especially after bending over, lying down, or eating
  • A burning in the throat, or the sensation of hot, sour, acidic, or salty-tasting fluid at the back of the throat

Other symptoms that may be associated with acid reflux are:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Feeling of food "sticking" in the middle of the chest or throat
  • Cough, sore throat, or hoarseness

If you have these symptoms, talk to your doctor. Reporting these symptoms is usually all your doctor needs to make a diagnosis. However, your doctor may perform various tests to determine the severity of your problem or to monitor your treatment. Please see your doctor to report any of these persistent symptoms.
