A public health advisory issued by the FDA on November 17, 2009, recommends patients
avoid the combination of omeprazole products (i.e., Prilosec Rx, Prilosec OTC®,
and generic/store-brand omeprazole) with clopidogrel, which is marketed as Plavix®.
The FDA recommends patients avoid the combination of these two drugs because, according
to data provided by the makers of Plavix, omeprazole may reduce the anti-clotting
effect of Plavix. However, the FDA recognizes that when used individually, these
products provide significant health benefits.
When used as directed, Prilosec OTC has a strong safety profile—millions of consumers
have tried it since it became available over the counter in 2003. However, consistent
with the FDA, we encourage our consumers to avoid the combination of omeprazole
with Plavix. The FDA also has advised that patients using Plavix should consult
with their healthcare provider if they are currently taking or considering taking
omeprazole, including Prilosec OTC.
Consumers currently treating frequent heartburn with Prilosec OTC and who are NOT
taking clopidogrel (Plavix) or other medications contraindicated on the Prilosec
OTC label can continue using Prilosec OTC as directed, unless indicated otherwise
by a healthcare professional.
Talk to a medical professional before you stop or start taking any medication or
if you have additional questions.
